Event Description:

A tour and discussion of the history of this Civil War era chapel, located in the churchyard of St. Paul's Church in Newburyport. The chapel interior has been unchanged since its consecration in April 1863, a time capsule for 154 years. St. Anna’s Chapel fourteen stained glass windows, created by Henry Sharp Studios of New York City, are some of the earliest examples of stained glass in New England, and indeed America.

The original hand pump organ, constructed by William Stevens of Boston, is original and intact, and has undergone a complete restoration to its original the full range of sound. The chapel was built in 1862 in memory of Anna Marie Horton, who died of tuberculosis in 1857. Anna was the only child of the Rev. William Horton, the rector of St. Paul’s Church prior to the commencement of the Civil War.
